Cloisonne enamel craft originated in the Yuan Dynasty, introduced from the Arab world to China. Continuously innovated by generations of artisans, it reached its peak during the Jingtai era of the Ming Dynasty (1450-1456), with products predominantly blue in color, hence the name Jingtailan.
During the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty, cloisonne craft flourished once again. Imperial wares were frequently made using this technique, representing the royal family's prestige. Its exquisite craftsmanship and magnificent designs have amazed people both in China and abroad.
In 2006, the cloisonne enamel technique was listed in the first batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage. It became an important representative of Chinese traditional handicrafts, receiving national protection and promotion.
5-Step Crafting Process
Every step refined, every piece undergoes hundreds of meticulous procedures
Create a delicate draft to determine the pattern layout, color matching, and structural form. This serves as a precise blueprint for subsequent steps and acts as the soulful starting point of the entire artwork.
Evenly apply a special adhesive onto the base or board to prepare for attaching the metal wires. This ensures the wires remain securely in place and serves as a crucial transitional step connecting the design to the physical piece.
Use tweezers to bend and pinch copper wires into patterns according to the draft, then attach them to the base to form the skeleton of the design. This step is the ultimate test of craftsmanship, where millimeter-level precision determines the spirit of the final piece.
Fill the compartments enclosed by copper wires with various colored enamel glazes, following the sequence of "background first, then motifs" and "dark colors first, then light." After multiple rounds of polishing, the enamel becomes rich and lustrous, endowing the piece with brilliant colors.
Polish the surface and apply a crystal-clear protective seal to ensure a mirror-smooth finish and lifetime durability against oxidation.This also enhances its wear and oxidation resistance, serving as the perfect finishing touch to the final product.
